Rafael Lorente is a former reporter with the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and Miami Herald. As a reporter in Washington for the Sun-Sentinel, Lorente covered the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections, the attacks of Sept. 11 and U.S. foreign policy toward Latin America, particularly Cuba. Karen Anderson, 23, is a journalism graduate student who will cover politics and the state's budget crisis. She received her undergraduate degree in political science and religion from Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She has interned at Campaigns and Elections' Politics Magazine and has been published in The Maryland Daily Record, The Laurel Leader, The Hyattsville Life & Times and The Prince George's County Sentinel. Megan E. Gustafson, 25, is a journalism graduate student at the University of Maryland who will cover education and health issues, with an emphasis on the H1N1 virus. She received her undergraduate degree in public relations from Marquette University in 2004. Before attending graduate school, she worked in communications for divisions of BASF and UnitedHealth Group. Gustafson is the business journalism fellow at UCG, a business-to-business information publisher in Gaithersburg, and has freelanced for the Greenbelt News Review and the Frederick News-Post. Catherine Krikstan, 22, is a journalism graduate student at the University of Maryland who will cover the Chesapeake Bay. She received her undergraduate degree in English with a minor in Asian studies from St. Mary's College. She has freelanced for EQUUS Magazine, The Prince George's Sentinel, The Takoma Voice and The Silver Spring Voice. Christopher Matthews, 25, is a journalism graduate student who will cover criminal justice issues. He has interned at Fox News Channel, the Mount Hope Monitor, washingtonpost.com and Salon.com. He has reported on the U.S. Congress, Bronx politics and a hostage standoff. Matthews has traveled widely, including seven-month stints in Paris and Australia, where he was a semi-professional lacrosse player. Bobby McMahon, 25, is a graduate journalism student at the University of Maryland who will cover business, transportation and the economic downturn.
