National and Regional Awards for Maryland Newsline

Maryland Newsline has won national and regional awards from the Society of Professional Journalists' Mark of Excellence contest for student journalists every year since its launch in 2001. They include:

2006

• A national finalist award for work completed in 2006. The award was for Online News Reporting, for a package on possibly the last tobacco auction in Maryland. The site also won six regional awards for work completed in 2006. They include a first for Best Affiliated Web site; a first and second for Online Indepth Reporting; a first and second for Online News Reporting; and a first for Online Feature Reporting.

  2005

• A national first-place award and a finalist's award for work completed in 2005. The first-place was for Online Feature Reporting; the finalist's mention was for Online In-depth Reporting. The site also won four first-place SPJ regional awards for work completed in 2005--including a first for best online independent publication. 

2004

• Two national finalists' awards for work completed in 2004. Finalists were for Online In-depth Reporting and Online General News Reporting. Those two entries won first-place awards in the regional SPJ Mark of Excellence contest. An additional entry in the In-depth Reporting category won second place.

  2003

• Three first-place awards in the national contest for work completed in 2003. Winners were for Online General News Reporting, Online Feature Reporting and Online In-depth Reporting. In addition, the site was a national finalist for best all-around independent student publication. Each of the entries won first place in their respective categories in the SPJ regional contest.

  2002

• A national first-place award for best independent online publication, for work completed in 2002. Four other student entries won national awards: For in-depth reporting (first place); general news reporting (second place); feature reporting (second place); and sports reporting (third place). Each of those entries won first place in their respective categories in the SPJ regional contest.

  2001

• A first place for in-depth reporting in the national contest, for student work completed in 2001. That entry and three others won awards in SPJ's regional contest: A first-place for feature reporting; and a first, second and third place for in-depth reporting.
