The bureau chief:

In August 2000, Chris Harvey left her job as managing editor at American Journalism Review to rejoin the faculty, focusing attention on the multimedia curriculum. She's worked as a professional journalist since 1980, including as an associate editor at washingtonpost.com in Arlington, Va. She served as director of the college's print news bureaus in Annapolis and Washington, and statehouse and congressional reporter for The Washington Times. She's free-lanced for The Washington Post and Congressional Quarterly's "Politics in America." She can be reached at charvey@jmail.umd.edu.

The graduate students:

Tamra Tomlinson, 33, is a 1999 graduate of the University of Memphis with a bachelor’s degree in international relations and a minor in Spanish. She expects to earn her master’s degree in journalism in May, and is working this semester as a multimedia reporter and news editor for Maryland Newsline. During her time at the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism, she has worked as an intern reporter and copy editor at the Silver Spring Voice and Takoma Voice newspapers, based in Takoma Park, Md., and as a contributor to the Prince George’s Sentinel. She also works as a part-time group fitness instructor with the University’s Campus Recreation Services. She can be reached at ttomlins@umd.edu.

Michelle Williams, 25, is a multimedia reporter and news editor for Maryland Newsline. She expects to earn her master’s degree in May from the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism. While at Maryland, Williams has written for various campus publications such as the faculty and staff publication Outlook Online and Terp magazine. She recently interned at The Nasdaq Stock Market Inc. as a Web site administrator. Williams is an alumna from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she received her bachelor’s degrees in communications and political science. She can be reached at mwilli30@umd.edu.

The undergrad:

Paula Vasan, 21, a senior print journalism major with a concentration in government and politics, will be working as a multimedia reporter for Maryland Newsline. She recently returned to College Park, Md., from a semester abroad in London, where she studied while interning at a financial daily newspaper. Vasan previously worked in her hometown of New York City for Inc. magazine, contributing to its list of the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies in the United States and writing about the people who lead them. She has also worked with a magazine covering the retirement and pension industries in Stamford, Conn., and served as an intern for The Examiner, a daily newspaper in Washington, D.C. Vasan has written for off-campus publications, such as the Prince George's Post, and on-campus publications, including The Public Asian. She recently accepted a 12-week internship with Yahoo! Finance of the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund in New York City. After her anticipated graduation in May, Vasan aspires to develop a career in financial journalism. She can be reached at pmvasan@gmail.com.
