What Does Obama’s Win Mean?

Democratic Sen. Barack Obama won nearly 57 percent of the popular vote in Maryland on his way to winning the presidency and making history as the nation’s first African-American president.

What does Obama’s win mean to the country, to Maryland and to you?

On Inauguration Day I was at the Washington Post building in downtown Washington, D.C., working on some multimedia stuff. The online stuff is usually done in Arlington, but for this huge event the Post needed some people downtown where the action was. I helped produce something called TimeSpace (http://specials.washingtonpost.com/timespace/inauguration/), a project The Washington Post has with Google Maps, that is basically a mash-up of maps, photos, video and text. TimeSpace Inauguration was all about what was going on all around the city during the inauguration. All day Post photographers out on the Mall were sending back photos that we captioned and geo-coded so they would appear in the right place on the map. When the inaugural parade began, I had to watch the TV closely to follow the president’s route and draw it on the map. (Stress levels were high as we tried to keep up!) While I was a little jealous of all my friends who got to go out to the Mall to watch the inauguration, I did get to be involved with a pretty interesting project on an important day and learn some new skills.
