Rebuilding La Plata After the Storm

A telephone repairman works on Oak Street

Telephone repairmen, electricians, firefighters, policemen, volunteers and construction and cleanup crews began work immediately to restore order.

By May 3, all power was restored to Charles County by the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative.

By May 8, 1,350 tons of rubble had been taken to a dump site off Route 301.

Trees and yard waste were dumped in a separate site.

More than 80 percent of calls and walk-ins to the People's Place -- a makeshift center offering help to confused residents -- were for the removal of trees and debris, said the Rev. Christopher Otten of the Grace Lutheran Church and School in La Plata.
