In the Middle or on the Outs: Pit Bulls in Maryland

Rodney Taylor, (left) associate director of the Prince George's County Animal Management Division, knows firsthand about the implications of a breed-specific ban. Since 1997, Prince George's County residents have not been permitted to own pit bulls or pit bull mixes. The ban also includes the American Staffordshire terrier and any mix of that breed. It's Taylor's job to enforce the ban. On more than one occasion, he's felt the ban was unnecessary. "I've gone into houses where the pit bull was just standing there in the living room, wagging its tail, ready to lick you to death." Under the ban, the dogs are to be immediately impounded and the owners arrested.
