The waiting areas were designed to be attractive and functional, senators say.
The old James Senate building has some rooms where only a few dozen members of the public can
watch.
The Miller building attempts to alleviate this by being, above all else, spacious.
A view from the end of one hall shows just how large this area is. This waiting room in front of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee sports
not one, but two, couches and plenty of space to mingle.
The Senate project, not
surprisingly, has prompted House members to clamor for more space. House Chief
of Staff Tom Lewis says a $27 million project will include renovations and an
addition to the existing House office building. Renovations are expected to begin in January
2002 and take about 18 months to complete, he says.
