The Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. Senate
Building in Annapolis, Md., is named for the longest-standing state Senate
president in the United States. Miller has been president since 1987. The new building bearing his name - and a $24 million price tag - incorporates cutting-edge technology with elegant decor. It opened
Jan. 9, 2001, just in time for this year's legislative session. Senators say the building was designed with the public in mind. Most areas are larger than
those in the old James Senate building, including the waiting areas and committee rooms.
The two buildings are now connected by walkways on two floors.
The open areas in the Miller building are also being used to display art from around the state, including "From Private Fortunes to Public Gifts: Treasures of the Peabody Art Collection of the Maryland State Archives." Above, the Tiffany skylight is one of many artistic touches in the new building. Below, Miller shows off one of the
lobby areas.
