In the District 3 race for Congress, Republican Bob Duckworth, an elected clerk of the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County, is taking on Democratic Rep. Ben Cardin. Find out how your opinions match up with theirs on seven key issues. Read the statements below and mark the opinion that best matches yours. If at any point you cannot choose, skip that question. At the end, click on the “get score” button to see what percentage of your responses align with each candidate’s.

    1. Do you support the speedy withdrawal of troops from Baghdad?
We need to train Iraqis at a faster pace, and we need to get more international help in our efforts in Iraq so we can bring our troops home. I support a withdrawal that leaves the Iraqi people in a better position than they were before. The withdrawal shouldn't be made before the job is done and the U.S. has achieved what it set out to do in the region.

    2. Are law enforcement agencies adequately staffed to handle potential terrorist strikes?
We need to adequately fund law enforcement agencies consistent with a national needs assessment. Some are and some aren't. Local budgets should be adequately funded to deal with the problem.

    3. Do you support a federal ban on assault weapons?
I support the extension of the ban that was in effect. I don't support a ban on assault weapons because it violates the Second Amendment.

    4. Should we amend the U.S. Constitution to define marriage as something that can only happen between a man and a woman?
No. Yes. I would support a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages.

    5. Would you support legislation that advocates the exploration of energy sources within the United States, like in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge? Earlier this year, the House and Senate rejected a proposal by the administration to include projected revenues from oil and gas leases from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the 2005 fiscal year budget.
No. Yes. We need to tap more gas and oil from Alaska but in an environmentally sound and safe way. I support weaning the country from a fossilized fuel system and encouraging uses of alternative energy sources. We need to reduce dependency on foreign oil.

No. Social Security should be partially privatized so that people can use and invest the money as they see fit. The system needs to be looked at and rehabilitated and not by raising the age limit for which people can collect from the program or by raising taxes.

    7. Would you support legislation to ban "partial-birth" abortion, conducted after the first trimester of pregnancy?
I oppose the legislating of medical procedures. Yes. I was born to a single mother, adopted when I was 5 and raised in a staunch Catholic environment. I take a pro-life stance in such matters.
