A Day of Celebration

The Jones family with hats

The Jones family of Hyattsville, Md., (from left): daughter Jennifer Jones, father Thomas L. Jones and mother Helena Jones show off their self-made hats outside the Baltimore Convention Center.

Each member of the family has a connection to education. Thomas Jones is a retired principal from the D.C. Public School system, Helena is a second grade teacher at Rosa Parks Elementary School in Prince George's County and Jennifer is a substitute teacher in Prince George's.

But Thomas Jones says he was attracted to the campaign because of the governor's stance on the environment. “The bay is experiencing a lot of pollution," he said.

He said the campaign asked him to place posters outside of his home, and he did. As a result of his help with the posters, Mr. Jones and his family were invited to attend both the swearing in and the evening celebration, he said.
