A
Desk at
Quince Orchard Colored School
Former students like Montgomery County
resident Helen Thompson, 75, said they used "hand-me-down" school desks from
"white" schools. Thompson said two students were usually assigned to
a desk, and several grades congregated in one classroom.
Montgomery County Board of
Education officials said those descriptions were
indeed typical of the early 20th century.
