Leaving Cole Field House, 1955-2002

The Comcast Center will replace Cole this fall as home of the Maryland Terrapins.

"It's going to be great."--Sophomore Nick Ebright

Comcast is the high-tech dream of a rising basketball team. Or maybe not, say some fans of Cole.

The $124 million facility will open this fall, two years after construction began. It boasts 20 luxury suites, air conditioning, a video scoreboard with monitors of the court, and wider seats with more legroom.

Comcast will fit 17,100 fans --2,500 more than Cole--but student seating will stay at 4,000. Student seats will start at floor level and wrap around the whole court, unlike at Cole, where students are split into sections.

Comcast will seat 2,500 more fans than Cole.

Construction began in 2000.

"Everything's first class, but we're also trying to keep the same campus atmosphere at Cole," said Jack Zane, director of the Walk of Fame.

The new center will have enough space to host the athletic department offices, training courts, a sports medicine training facility and a merchandise outlet.

Some can't wait for the new place to open.

Nick Ebright, a sophomore, says he is looking forward to the first game at Comcast. "It's going to be great," he says.

As for the history ... it will come later.
