The bureau chief:
In August 2000, Chris Harvey
left her job as managing editor at American Journalism Review to rejoin the
faculty, focusing attention on the online curriculum. She's worked as a
professional journalist since 1980, including as associate editor at washingtonpost.com, director of the college's print news bureaus in
Annapolis and Washington, and statehouse and congressional reporter for The
Washington Times. She's free-lanced for The Washington Post and
Congressional Quarterly's "Politics in America."

The grad students:
Hortense M. Barber, 23, is working as a multimedia reporter and
news editor for Maryland Newsline. In 2005, she graduated from McDaniel College
with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in secondary education. She
has interned as a reporter for The Prince George’s Sentinel, covering
community events and issues in Prince George’s County, and at
Education Week, where she wrote briefs for the Web site. She expects to earn
her Master's in Journalism degree from the University of Maryland in May. She can be reached

Diego Mantilla, 28, is an international student from Ecuador
who
expects to earn his Master's in Journalism degree from the University of
Maryland in May. He began his studies in the United
States at Montgomery College in Rockville, Md., and got a bachelor’s degree in computer networking from Strayer University in 2004.
He interned in spring 2004 with La Nacion, a Spanish-language daily based in
Washington, D.C. He has also done occasional freelancing for The Narcosphere,
a Web site focused on news about Latin America. He has worked as a network administrator, a second-hand bookshop clerk and a cable guy.
The undergraduates:
Jonathan Aicher, 22, is working as a multimedia reporter and producer for Maryland Newsline. He will graduate this summer with a degree in print journalism.
Last fall, he worked for USA TODAY Sports as a reporter and researcher. He has also done freelance work for various campus newspapers and magazines. He can be reached at jaicher@umd.edu.
Jackie Strause, 21, is working as a producer, news editor and researcher for Maryland Newsline.
She will earn her bachelor's degree in
journalism in May. Last summer, she interned in the online department at the fifth largest newspaper in the nation, The New York Post. Previously, she has interned as an editorial assistant for CosmoGirl! magazine, Philadelphia Style magazine
and Niche Media LLC, which owns seven national magazines. She can be reached at jstrause@umd.edu.
