COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Joseph Paulson, a senior math major at the University of Maryland, purchased an iPhone 3GS last year.

Before that purchase, he says he never bothered to check out the New York Times or National Public Radio. With the aid of mobile apps, he’s become an avid reader of both news organizations on his phone.

“It has pretty much changed the course of [my] information gathering,” said Paulson, 21.

Not all students use mobile apps to increase their news IQ. Natasha Lodha, a sophomore bioengineering major at the University of Maryland, uses an app to keep up with her Bible readings.

Many other students use the software to stay engaged with social networking sites.

Alison Pickover, a senior psychology major, said she mostly uses the Facebook app. She checks Facebook three times an hour through her phone.

“Mobile apps are definitely not a fad,” Pickover said. “The demand for these things [isn't] even close to going down.”
