  Death On Hold

Maryland's gas chamber / Photo by Kim Harris

From 1957 through 1961, the gas chamber (left) was the means of execution in Maryland. Before that, inmates were  hanged.

Use of the gas chamber was stopped because the U.S. Supreme Court ruled it was cruel and unusual punishment.

The state Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services has more on the history of executions in Maryland.
