Rebuilding La Plata After the Storm

The living room spills out into the yard of a home in downtown La Plata.

The American and Maryland flags are placed on top of a damaged house in downtown La Plata.

The majority of houses damaged by the tornado will be leveled and rebuilt from the ground up, county officials said.

La Plata officials said they expected an acceleration of an urban design or "vision" plan the town had been preparing before the tornado.

Funding that plan had earlier proved difficult, said Assistant Town Manager Patti Bembe. But now with aid coming from the federal and state governments and various organizations, the plan could move forward, she said.

Introduced in March 2000, the plan focuses on remodeling downtown La Plata to imbue more of an old town charm, Bembe said.
