In the Middle or on the Outs: Pit Bulls in Maryland

Many animal rights advocates strongly opposed Boutin's proposed ban. Kerry K. Vinkler (left), director of humane education and public relations for the Montgomery County Humane Society, notes that when bred properly, pit bulls are not aggressive toward people. She says the problem stems from irresponsible owners who breed for size and aggression, instead of the dogs' good qualities. Such scenarios often lead to dog fighting and abuse, which may also lead to attacks on humans, she says.
