The Mighty Turtle of Maryland by Catherine Nickle at the Visitor Center.

Audio: Catherine Nickle talks about her turtle.
(27 seconds, RealPlayer file)

"I wanted him to look like a warrior leading Maryland on," says Catherine Nickle, 65, about her fierce yet friendly Testudo.

While driving home one day she got the idea to name her sculpture after the Mighty Sound of Maryland, the university's marching band.

"Why not the Mighty Turtle of Maryland?" she asks. "Our sports teams are mighty, so it fits."

Nickle's turtle stands outside the campus Visitor Center along Route 1. He clutches a Duke University Blue Devil in one hand while the other holds a spear from the Florida State University Seminoles. He is stomping on the University of North Carolina Tar Heel ram.

"I think Maryland's a great campus. I have three daughters who went here," said Nickle, who lives in Beltsville, Md., and works as an administrative assistant on campus.
