Kevin Richardson, a graphic designer for the Baltimore Sun, is a veteran public-art sculptor.

He has designed sculptures of various animals -- including elephants, donkeys, panda bears, crabs, seagulls, bluebirds and now turtles -- for about nine different cities around the nation.

Richardson designed two Testudo sculptures: Super Fan, stationed outside Byrd Stadium, and Terps Basketball Legends, outside Cole Field House.

Super Fan is dedicated to the university's sports fans, Richardson says. Terps Basketball Legends shows Testudo wearing a red jersey and shorts. On his back are portraits of Richardson's favorite Maryland ball players.

"I've always been a follower of the University of Maryland basketball team," he says.

Richardson says it was difficult picking 10 of his favorite college basketball players to paint on Testudo's shell for Legends.

"I just wish I had another turtle that I could've just devoted to the other ball players that gave their heart and soul to the University of Maryland," he says.
